In order to improve European preparedness and response to major crises and pandemics, CTMA has been developing the deployable laboratory B-LiFE since 2008. This laboratory has served in Africa and Europe during major crises. B-LiFE participated to many in national and international exercises where it served as an innovation and emerging technology incubator. The structure, organisation and functionalities characterizing the CTMA-RMML, named B-LiFE (Biologic Light Fieldable Laboratory for Emergencies) has been thoroughly documented in several publications (see supra sections 1-3).
Through its successful participation in the international exercise MODEX 2017 (Revinge, Sweden, April 2017) and the ModTTX 4 top table, B-LiFE underwent certification as a module of the EUCPM (Civil Protection Mechanism, Voluntary pool/DG ECHO) in 2017. (Bruges, May 2017). It collaborates regularly with national and international authorities, including European Commission DG ECHO and WHO.
CTMA is also a founding member of the Rapid Response Laboratory network (RRML) supported by WHO Emergency Programme with the support of the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN) and GOARN partner institutions of the WHO European region. This network brings together Belgium (CTMA’s B-LiFE deployable Laboratory), Germany (Robert Koch Institute, Bundeswehr Institute of Microbiology), France (Pasteur Institute), England (Public Health England) and Russian Federation (Rospatrebnazor, the Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Right Protection and Human Wellbeing). The network’s goal is to work on harmonization and basic standardisation within deployable laboratories. In 2022, B-LiFE joins GOARN (Global Alert Response Network). At the request of WHO and the Moldovan health authorities, the B-LiFE team deployed in Chisinau Moldova, to train Moldovan personnel in biosafety, biosecurity and laboratory procedures inside a mobile laboratory.
